despite the significant strides that we have made in advancing the science and application of aerogels, we have really only just begun.
Aspen Aerogels, Inc. is leading the introduction and integration of aerogel materials into
industrial, military and commercial applications. New uses and demanding environments
continue to push the performance demands of our materials. Our R&D organization is charged
with meeting those demands and expanding the frontiers of aerogel technology. We engage
some of the brightest minds and practical thinkers to advance aerogel technology with the
following directions in mind:
  • Higher performance in extreme environments
  • Fundamental understanding of process/structure/product relationships
  • Novel materials and form factors
  • Lower cost
  • New uses and applications
  • Fabrication and applications engineering
Our scientists and engineers work closely with our customers to fully understand application
requirements and to guide advancements for tomorrow’s aerogel materials. We continue to
expand our R&D and recently moved to a newly renovated 10,000 square foot laboratory in
Northborough, MA.

research
Our researchers are exploring the chemistry and process technologies of aerogel materials; they
continue to extend the performance in response to needs for:
  • High thermal stability
  • High compression strength
  • Low density
  • Low thermal conductivity at low, ambient and high temperatures
  • High resilience and flexibility
  • Environmental resistance
      development
Our product development team is responsive to our customer’s needs for new and broader
performance aerogel products. They are expanding the aerogel product line to include new
grades of flexible aerogel with higher temperature performance; compression resistance; flame
and smoke resistance; and improved low signature properties.

analytical services
Aspen Aerogels has invested in characterization capability for chemical, mechanical and thermal
property measurements. Our instrumentation allows:

  • Determination of surface area, pore size and pore size distribution.
  • Determination of particle size and particle size distribution.
  • Measurement of Thermal Conductivity from -130 to 500°C
  • Thermal Stability by Simultaneous TGA/DSC/MS
  • Compositional analysis by GC/MS and a variety of spectral techniques
  • Molecular Weight Determinations by GPC
  • Mechanical and physical testing
      process r&d
We have a range of pilot equipment that allows rapid examination of formulation and process
variables at the research scale through progressively larger operations. This capability allows
us to study and continuously improve upon our operating processes and provides the ability to
produce a range of novel product forms.

We are passionate about exploring new aerogels and their applications.
